The red berets attacked Clicks stores nationwide as per Malema's instructions after the retailer published an ad last week, which insults black hair. Clicks have said that the ad was put together by TRESemmé and they merely published it. But the EFF is calling for all those behind the ad to be fired. A number of Clicks stores nationwide have been damaged and forced to close by EFF members who heeded the call by Malema on social media to attack. ZONDO: COVID-19 RELIEF FUND CORRUPTION IS FRIGHTENING

Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo made the remarks after asking Parliament's former correctional services portfolio chair Vincent Smith whether Parliament really had the power to rein in ministers and departments. State capture inquiry chair Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo said the COVID-19 corruption was frightening and showed that those who did wrong knew nothing would happen to them. Zondo made the remarks after asking Parliament's former correctional services portfolio chair Vincent Smith whether Parliament really had the power to rein in ministers and departments. “It’s like you say, nothing will happen. We can just continue as normal because nothing will happen and that may well be because they look around and ask, what has happened to whom?” Former ANC MP Smith is at the commission to testify on the more than R500,000 he received from Bosasa and the alleged installation of security cameras at his house. Smith said his relationship with Bosasa’s late CEO Gavin Watson

’We don’t have political purges in the DA,’ says Helen Zille

Democratic Alliance (DA) federal council chairwoman Helen Zille on Monday said there was no purge of black leaders in the official opposition and those who implied one, were, in fact, belittling the people who had left. “We don’t have political purges in the DA,” Zille told a media briefing. “As to my being involved in purging leaders, it is impossible to do that within our rules and our systems. It is absolutely impossible to do that.” She was responding to questions about the DA’s policy conference at the weekend, where the 140 members of its federal council adopted a blueprint that dropped race as an outright qualifier for redress on economic exclusion. In a wholesale rejection of existing black empowerment policies, they agreed that there were better, more reliable indicators of disadvantage. The event was overshadowed by the fallout from the resignation of the party’s Gauteng leader, John Moodey, in a controversy of allegations and counter-allegations on the existence of jobs for

142 train stations in Gauteng have no power, leaving townships stranded

T he majority of metro train stations in Gauteng do not have functioning electricity, a situation that has left many townships without the cheap mode of transport. Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula revealed in a written Parliamentary reply that 142 train stations in Gauteng do not have power. Only 90 of the stations in the province have functioning electricity. Gauteng, the country’s economic hub, has 232 stations stretching from Randfontein to Soshanguve and Vereeniging to Katlehong. The data Mbalula supplied in response to questions asked by the DA’s Thamsanqa Mabhena meant 53% of the stations in Gauteng have no power. Among the four provinces with Metrorail trains, Gauteng led the pack in terms of stations without power. Only 10 out of 102 stations in KwaZulu-Natal were without functioning electricity. In the Western Cape, there were just 15 out of 124, and seven of the Eastern Cape’s train stations were without power. Passenger Rail Agency of SA said the issue had worsened during t

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle repay R40 million spent on renovating Frogmore Cottage

Britain's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have repaid 2.4 million pounds ($3.16 million) in public money used to refurbish a house on the grounds of Windsor Castle after they signed a contract with Netflix to produce programs. Frogmore Cottage last year became the official residence of the couple but after they announced in January that they would seek new careers outside the royal family, Harry and Meghan said they would repay the money spent on refurbishing it. "A contribution has been made to the Sovereign Grant by The Duke of Sussex (Harry)," a spokesperson for the couple said. "This contribution as originally offered by Prince Harry has fully covered the necessary renovation costs of Frogmore Cottage, a property of Her Majesty The Queen, and will remain the UK residence of The Duke and his family." Harry is Queen Elizabeth's grandson.

ECOWAS summit calls for co-operation from Mali’s junta

The military junta in Mali must work with the West African regional bloc to ensure a swift return to civilian rule, Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou said on Monday, opening a summit in which Mali's post-coup progress is high on the agenda. A group of army colonels has ruled Mali since ousting President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita on August 18. No consensus has yet been reached on the make-up and duration of a transitional government ahead of promised elections. The 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is calling for a vote within a year, a timeline the junta, the National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP), has not committed to. "It is the duty of our community to assist Malians with the rapid recovery of all democratic institutions. The military junta must help us to help Mali," ECOWAS chairman Issoufou said. The bloc will issue a communique on the results of the summit, which is also expected to address other regional issues, including

Joburg addict's 'hell and back' journey to recovery laid bare in new book

From experiencing sexual, emotional and mental abuse at the hands of her stepfather and losing her mother to suicide, to turning to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain of her troubled childhood, the Joburg-born woman has lived a painful life. Having kept a memoir of her difficult times, Stone, now a reiki healer, has released a new book The Art of Determination which chronicles her journey from a dark past as a drug and alcohol addict, to a future filled with self-love, determination and spirituality. The book focuses on Stone’s abuse by her stepfather and how that led to a life of drug and alcohol addiction, as well as her toxic relationships with various men, who also struggled with addictions. It also details her road to recovery and how she used spirituality to gain back her life. The Saturday Star chatted to Stone about her new book and the painful memories she experienced as a teen and young woman. What is The Art of Determination about? “I took journal entries from the year 2012

South African consumer confidence rebounds, but remains deeply depressed

The FNB/BER Consumer Confidence Index posted a 10-point rebound in the third quarter of 2020, to -23. In the previous quarter, it had crashed 24 points to a 35-year-low of -33. Aside from that blow-out, the index is at levels last seen in 1993, suggesting that consumer confidence has been all but shattered. The quarterly FNB/BER Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) is a widely watched barometer. There are some silver linings in this quarter’s reading, but the outlook is pretty bleak.  “To be sure, the significant slowdown in the rate of new Covid-19 infections in SA, the further easing of restrictions on economic activity and the partial recovery in consumer confidence are all good for the South African economy,” an FNB statement said. “However, the fact that the CCI regained only 10 index points following its (Q2) plunge reinforces our view that the Covid-19 pandemic and related economic restrictions delivered a profound blow to consumers’ willingness and ability to spend — and it may ta

SA Human Rights Commission intervenes in SA Express crisis as fate of airline hangs in the air

The SA Human Rights Commission wants to urgently meet with the government as it believes that the human rights of SA Express workers have been infringed because they haven’t been paid for work done or received retrenchment packages. Ahead of a crucial court hearing this week that will determine the future of SA Express, the government has been hauled to the SA Human Rights Commission to explain why more than 600 workers have not been paid their full salaries for six months. SA Express is a troubled state-owned airline that is under provisional liquidation because it has completely run out of cash, and its future now is in the hands of the court. On Wednesday 9 September, the high court in Johannesburg will hear arguments from SA Express-affected parties that are either for or against converting the provisional liquidation of SA Express into final liquidation. A final liquidation would mark the end of SA Express’s 26-year existence and its business of operating flights that typically
